The method by which a laser places a mark inside a transparent medium, also referred to as “subsurface marking”, is covered under worldwide patents.

Domestically the process is covered by Australian Patent Number 654,287. Imaage Pty. Ltd. and its parent company Crystal Concepts Holdings Pty. Ltd. have acquired exclusive rights to the use of this patented technology within Australia. The process covers both locally produced and pre-lasered imported product.

Under its master license agreement Crystal Concepts Holdings Pty. Ltd. has also granted sub-licenses to companies in WA, SA & QLD.

Patent litigation

In November 2005 as a result of ongoing patent litigation, Imaage Pty. Ltd. acquired the assets of 3D Crystal. 3D Crystal was an unlicensed operator of sub-surface laser engraving equipment based in Queensland Australia. This outcome has allowed Imaage to consolidate the industry and move forward with its plans for expansion throughout the country. Crystal Concepts Holdings Pty. Ltd. and Imaage Pty. Ltd. will continue to vigorously defend their rights under the patent.
