LED Technology (Busting the Myths)
Myth: "LEDs aren't bright enough"
Fact: Recent technological advancements over the last 12 months in LED Technology, heat sinks and lens design make lots of LED lighting products suitable for a large range of lighting applications.
Myth: "LEDs are directional and don't spread light"
Fact: Many LED fixtures now have beam angles over 120°. This is double the beam angle of a standard 50w halogen downlight. Beam angles can range from 10° - 180°
Myth: "LEDs are more expensive than traditional lighting"
Fact: "when a comprehensive analysis is undertaken comparing LED / Induction lighting these systems are in fact more cost effective. Payback times vary from approx. 2.5 yrs - 3 yrs depending on the project.
Myth: "LEDs don't produce heat"
Fact: LEDs do produce heat, they are however more efficient at converting electrical energy into light and not heat. (80% light 20% heat) The heat that is produced, although not much, is extremely critical to the operation of the LED chip. Often you will see large heat sinks on LED lighting products. The heat sinks ensure that the LED chip is operating efficiently.
Myth: "All LEDs are equal"
Fact: There are many different brands of LEDs on the market today, this makes it hard to know what you are buying. LED chip quality ranges significantly, LEDs are technically hard to make with many factors affecting performance and lifespan. In the LED industry you get what you pay for. Look for well made fittings with appropriate heat sinking.
